Warm temperatures continued through the spring and summer moderating slightly into fall and extending an early harvest. Overall 2015 saw very favorable growing conditions producing optimal ripening across varieties and yielding outstanding wines throughout the region. WINEMAKING Grapes were sourced from vineyards throughout the Columbia Valley including the Horse Heaven Hills. The fruit was de-stemmed and crushed before undergoing 7-10 day fermentations. Merlot and other varieties were blended in to build structure and complexity. The wine was aged for several months in a combination of American and French oak barrels to soften and round the blend. "The Vintage After warmer than average 2012 and 2013 vintages 2014 in Eastern Washington was one of the warmest seasons in decades with favorable temperature conditions extending into fall. Overall 2014 was a pleasant growing season; ripening was excellent for all varieties in all locations. Winemaking Fruit was sourced throughout eastern Washington State including the Horse Heaven Hills Wahluke Slope Yakima Valley and other parts of the Columbia Valley. After gentle pressing the juice was cold settled for two days then racked off solids to a combination of barrels and stainless steel tanks. Approximately 15% of the wine was fermented in predominantly neutral oak barrels then underwent a malolactic conversion. A small portion of aromatic white varieties were added to enhance floral and fruity characters in the final blend. A BY ACACIA PINOT NOIR (CALIFORNIA) [United States]

Our 2015 Pinot Noir reveals itself in elegant turns-from vibrant red cherry raspberry and juicy dark plum to hints of sun-warmed red rose petal and fragrant oak spices. The textbook perfect 2015 vintage gave us time to focus on each and every vineyard block as they ripened under sunny skies. Supple fine-grained tannins softly frame this Pinot Noirs fruit-forward cashmere-textured flavors. The result is a versatile wine that pairs deliciously with grilled salmon roast lamb or sizzling pork chops. We also love it with four-cheese pasta a mushroom ravioli or rich mushroom risotto. Vineyard Notes We have established close relationships with growers in ideal viticultural regions for our Pinot Noir giving both quality and consistency to this wine. For 2015 we selected Pinot Noir grapes from the Central Coast AVA and the Borden Ranch AVA in the cooler Delta region of Lodi. Pinot Noir vines yield t

AALTO RIBERA DEL DUERO [Spain]

"Climatic Conditions: The winter was cold and rainy but spring was fortunately mild and the shoots appeared at the end of April a little earlier than usual but having avoided any frost damage. May and June were warm but not in excess reaching a maximum temperature of 29o °C allowing for a progressive and even development of the vines. The summer months were perfect with a high interval of temperatures between day and night - an important quality factor in our region- and by mid August with the beginning of veraison we began to suspect we were heading for a great year. Septembers early rains were very beneficial and we began to harvest grapes of exceptional quality on the 22nd. In no hurry at all and at a very comfortable pace we finished on October 13th. The fermentations confirmed our expectations: 2014 is one of the very best years of the last decade in Ribera del Duero. Grape Origin: 100 % Tinto Fino (Te

ABADIA RETUERTA SELECCION ESPECIAL [Spain]

"This is our best-known wine worldwide. Produced from a selection of the best grapes from each of our vineyards it combines the richness of a Tempranillo and the elegance of a Cabernet Sauvignon with the strength of a Syrah. Dark red colour with a clean complex and fresh nose. On the palate it has an intense fruity touch mainly of red fruits. Aged 16 months in French and American oak barrels the wood infuses notes of cedar pastry and dark roasting. It attacks the palate politely but firmly. In 2005 Abadia Retuerta Seleccion Especial 2001 received the award at the International Wine Challenge in London as the worlds best red wine. This is a very well-balanced wine harmonious with a rich bouquet and incredible expressiveness. Worthy fruit of the vine and of a job well done." - Abadia Retuerta

"Speaking to the terroir of Napa Valleys Los Carneros region this 2015 Chardonnay opens with lush White Lady peach Jonathan apple and citrus zest aromas with tones of warm honeycomb and oak. The wine expands across the palate in rich silky layers of spiced baked apples and pear with a hint of minerality appearing mid-palate. The flavors perfecting an exquisite balance of lemony acidity and creamy complexity then culminate in a lingering finish graced by hazelnut and oak spice from barrel fermentation and aging. "Our Burgundy Chardonnay "Secret de Famille" is produced with vines located in Co;te dOr region only around extremely well-located vineyards on the outskirts of the villages well-known for their white wines (St Aubin Meursault Puligny-Montrachet...). We treat these wines as if they were white village from the Co;te de Beaune where the yields are low of course with perfectly appropriate ageing. Tasting The nose is dominated by hints of citrus and white flowers and evolve in notes of honey and dried fruits. The mouth is very balanced skillfully blending vivacity and roundness. What ensued was a perfect growing season with even budbreak beautiful weather at bloom and fruit set that produced a bountiful crop. The full-sized clusters across the Eisele Vineyard completed veraison by mid-July and flavor intensity developed steadily throughout the summer. Warm days and cool nights over the length of the growing season resulted in daily temperature swings of up to 50 degrees and these variances allowed the tannins to ripen harmoniously while sugar levels increased slowly through a cooler than average September. Harvest of the Bordeaux varietals began on September 22nd and three days of moderate heat at the start of October set the stage for the final pick of Eisele Cabernet on the 16th. "Our hillside and valley floor estate vineyards in Wooden Valley are at elevations of 700 to 1000 feet. Soil types on the ranch which are similar to the Rutherford Bench and the mountainous regions of Howell Mountain Pritchard Hill and Mount Veeder called for several different clones of Cabernet Sauvignon on a number of different rootstocks upon planting in 1986. The vines are dry-farmed and vertically trellised. Fermentation of Altamura Cabernet Sauvignon occurs in both open and closed top fermenters. Certain lots are allowed to macerate on their skins for up to three weeks following fermentation. This technique produces a wine with softer more integrated tannins which carry fruit and oak nuances through to the palate. The vineyard in Wooden Valley predicates a Sangiovese that resembles Brunello more than Chianti. Because it is 100% Sangiovese the true flavors of the varietal are retained. The hand picked grapes are gently crushed into open and closed top tanks for fermentation. The exclusive use of free run juice allows the undiluted and unhampered expression of pure Sangiovese flavors. Following fermentation the wine is racked into 60 gallon medium toast French oak barrels for 24 months inside the stone winery and caves thus achieving richness of color and the softening of tannins of this vibrant and youthful varietal. Our Ampelos Vineyard in Sta. Rita Hills is the first in the US to be certified sustainable organic and biodynamic. Our commitment to natural farming and winemaking is evident in every sip. Wine Making Style: After we harvested the fruit it will stay 1 day in our cold room to avoid using dry ice. The fruit is cold soaked for about 3 days and then the natural wild yeast will kick in for the primary fermentation. We hand punch down twice a day to assist the extraction of colors tan

AMPELOS ROSE SYRAH [United States]

Soil. Vines. Wines. This is the order in which great wine is made. Our little firecracker is an intentional flirt with a dash of grenache and dollop of riesling. Ampelos is the Greek word for vine. The relationship we have with our land is paramount in producing minimally invasive wines that showcase the terroir from which it is grown. The evidence is in every delicious sip. Wine Making Style Our overall rose style is to keep the ripe flavor of the syrah grapes alive and allow for the natural aromas and flavors to come forward. A third of the cuatro vientos and the estate syrah was de-stemmed crushed and cold soaked for 5 days to give it the beautiful glowing pink color and a deep red-wine alike mouth feel with light tannins From 2011 we have not been using commercial yeast for fermentation - but rather let mother natures wild yeast do the job. we had 10 different batches in stainless steel tanks and barre

ANDRE CLOUET CUVEE 1911 BRUT CHAMPAGNE 6/CS [France]

The NV Grand Cru Cuvee 1911 emerges from the glass with the most haunting of perfumes. Sweet rose petal and jasmine are some of the nuances that emerge over time. Despite recent disgorgement the purity of the fruit and the extraordinary elegance of the mousse are hard to miss. This is an exceptional elegant version of the 1911 that should drink beautifully for years to come. The bottle I tasted needed quite a bit of air to open up so readers should be patient with the wine at this stage. The current release of the 1911 is 100% Pinot Noir 50% 2002 vintage and 50% a solera blend that dates back to 1998. This is Lot L05 disgorged October 4 2010 and bottled with dosage of 6 grams per liter. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020. This is another strong set of wines from Andre Clouet. Readers who appreciate Pinot-based Champagnes will find much to admire here. - Robert Parker The Wine Advocate
